Behold visual novel Cinders, an interactive experience inspired by the age-old fable, Cinderella.

Wait, visual novel? What’s that doing on a gaming site?

A visual novel is basically interactive fiction, and I quote Wikipedia, “featuring mostly static graphics”. In essence, it’s an interactive storybook much in the vein of Living Books of yore…albeit with more character choices.

Cinders, by developers MoaCube, will focus on the four women characters central to the tale of Cinderella. It will look at their motivations, and is heavy on player choices and roleplaying. The game boasts 120 decision points and over 300 options to choose from, and you’ll be able to shape the main character’s personality and the course of the story.

It’s a perfect visual novel for this generation, where gamers are no longer content to sit and watch and have the attention spans of short YouTube videos. The adult choices also make it a great update to the stale fable, which, after 60 years of being defined by Disney, can certainly use a makeover.

Cinders looks absurdly gorgeous, too.

You can try a demo for Windows or Mac, and pre-purchase the game at the same link.
