The best things in the American tech world seem to come when we sleep, when Apple unveiled their new wares this morning, including the new iPhone 5.

iPhone 5

Let’s cut to the chase. It’s what many of you were anticipating despite the many leaks and revelations you have probably seen online. The off-sequence-numbered iPhone 5 is the sixth generation iPhone that is not simply thinner and lighter, but taller than its predecessors with a new 4-inch, 16:9 Retina Display, allowing for full-display of HD videos without letterboxing and the display of FIVE row of apps on the home screen.

The device houses the new A6 chip, twice as fast as the A5 on the iPhone 4S, and capable of better performance for graphics-heavy gaming. It also works along with power-efficiency, providing for up to 8 hours of talk time and 10 hours of video playback, on par with the previous generation.

Aesthetically, the iPhone 5 ditches the glass on the back for an aluminum back found on MacBooks and glass inlays for the top and bottom of the device. In the box is also a new pair of Earpods, Apple’s new earphones that is specifically designed for comfort and quelling of the complaints over the old in-box earphones over the years. The headphone jack is now located at the bottom like the iPod touch, where the new smaller Lightning dock connector replaces the 30-pin dock connector slot. The phone also utilizes the very-new nanoSIM SIM card, smaller than the microSIM cards we were all fussing about when the iPhone 4 came out two years ago.

iOS 6

Nothing new here, besides iSight Panorama for the iPhone 4S and 5 and the fact that the software update will be bringing the all-new Maps, Facebook integration, Siri improvements and more for iOS devices ranging from iPhones 3GS to 5, iPod touch 4G and 5G and iPad 2 and “New”, made available on September 19th.

All three of our local telcos are set to embrace and start taking in orders for the iPhone 5 on September 21st. Frankly, I wish our early adopters all the best with their wonderful new data plans. Subsequently, the iPhone 4S will only come new in a 16GB flavour.
